A plan for retired servers, storage and network hardware
Data center equipment retirement combines inventory, security requirements, site access and commercial recovery decisions. WTWT supports the equipment disposition portion of these projects, from scoping collection to reviewing reuse and downstream outcomes. Your IT and facilities teams define the systems that are ready for retirement.
Build a useful retirement inventory
List server models and configurations, storage systems, drives, switches, routers and other network hardware. Include quantities, asset tags, serial numbers where available, condition, location and the planned removal window. Flag equipment that must be handled as a tracked data-bearing asset.
Agree on data-device routing before collection
Identify HDDs, SSDs, storage arrays and other devices that may retain information. Document the required sanitization or destruction outcome, who will perform the work and what evidence is needed. Project-specific processing arrangements should be confirmed before equipment is released.
Coordinate collection with site operations
Define loading access, packaging, pallet counts, authorized handoff contacts and any rack or floor restrictions. Use ITAD pickup and logistics planning to align removal with the site schedule. Electrical work, live-system shutdown and other facilities tasks are outside this page’s equipment-recovery scope unless separately agreed.
Review resale value and reconcile the project
Retired enterprise hardware may retain value depending on its configuration and condition. Discuss IT asset recovery and the serialized records needed for close-out. Send a project inventory to begin the review.
